Simon Northeast
For a sustainable Surf Coast. For a responsible Surf Coast Council.
Our place and our future
Surf Coast communities need leadership that is forward-looking, and focussed on community and environmental sustainability.
The Greens’ Simon Northeast will listen to and work with all Surf Coast communities to develop solutions to their problems and issues – solutions which maintain the health and well-being of communities and our shared environment.
Simon will work to ensure that Council services are inclusive, accessible and economically and environmentally sustainable. Simon will work for: -
- flexible and accessible child- and aged-care options throughout the shire;
- public and shared-transport options that improve access;
- increased engagement with State Government to ensure that Land Use Planning decisions reflect local community and environmental needs and concerns;
- more opportunities for locally-based education and employment;
- recreational services and infrastructure which recognise the role of recreation for individual and community wellbeing; and
- ‘community engagement’ which is treated as a genuine process by Council to ensure that community voices are reflected in council decisions about Surf Coast communities and environmental sustainability.
As domestic economic realities – such as the increasing cost of living associated with the high price of fuel and, shortly, a price on greenhouse gas emissions – increasingly blur with global environmental concerns – such as global warming and the declining availability of oil – Surf Coast communities need responsive, strong and progressive leadership to advocate for their interests at local, state and federal levels of government. Surf Coast Councillors must have a well informed and principled capacity to engage with the hard and difficult policy challenges presented by these environmental developments.
The Greens’ Simon Northeast will engage at all these levels to ensure that the Surf Coast Shire is best placed to explore creative and lasting solutions to the lifestyle and environmental issues that will continue to dominate our lives.
Simon has a broad understanding of community and environmental sustainability and a vision for the role of local government in supporting the wellbeing of both. Simon will work in Council to support local communities to live more sustainably.
